How do I choose the right class?

Every class listing includes a skill level guide — Beginner (no experience needed), Intermediate (confident using your machine), or Advanced (experienced garment sewing). If you're still not sure, just get in touch and we'll help you find the right fit.

I'm a complete beginner — is that okay?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Our beginner classes are designed for people with zero prior experience. Classes are small, relaxed and supportive, so you'll get plenty of individual help throughout the day.

Question 3

I'm nervous — what are classes actually like?

Accepted Answer

Very friendly. Most people come on their own and everyone's in the same boat. You'll be sewing alongside a small group with a teacher close by the whole time. There's no pressure and no silly questions.

Can I come on my own?

Yes — most people do. Our classes attract a lovely mix of people and it's a great way to meet others who love making things.

What should I bring to class?

If you have a sewing machine, bring it along with its power cord, foot pedal, and any accessories. If not, studio machines are available at no extra cost. Food and drinks are welcome if your class spans lunch — there's a fridge and microwave. A full list of what to bring is sent to you after booking.

What if I'm late?

Classes start on time. If you're running late, let us know and we'll keep your spot. Teachers stay with the class — if you don't show without getting in touch, your place is forfeited.

What if I can't make it to my class?

Accepted Answer

Due to small class sizes we're unable to offer make-up classes. More than 14 days before your class you can make free changes or receive a 90% refund. Within 14 days of the class, bookings are final — no changes, refunds, or transfers. No-shows are non-refundable.

What if Usefulbox cancels a class?

If we cancel a class you'll receive a full refund or transfer — your choice.

Question 9

Will I finish my project in class?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes for smaller projects. Larger garments may need a little finishing at home, but you'll leave with the skills and confidence to do it.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes — gift vouchers make a lovely present. They're digital, delivered by email, and valid for 3 years from the date of purchase.

Do I need to bring my own machine?

Accepted Answer

No. We have Brother Innovis A80 and Bernina 335 machines available for all students. Both are beginner-friendly and lovely to sew on. If you have your own machine and want to use it, you're welcome to bring it.

Which sewing machine should I buy?

Accepted Answer

We've put together an honest buyers guide covering what to look for, which brands we recommend (and which to avoid), and specific machine picks at every price point. You can also try our studio machines in any class before committing to a purchase.

My sewing machine isn't working — can you help?

Accepted Answer

Bring it in and we'll take a look. If it needs a service, you can drop it at the studio and we'll arrange everything with our trusted repairer, Castillo Machine Repairs. In the meantime you're welcome to use one of our studio machines during class.

Do you offer machine servicing?

Yes — you can drop your machine at our Marrickville studio and we'll arrange servicing through Castillo Machine Repairs, run by Ludwim. We use him for our own studio machines. Servicing typically costs $150–$250 depending on what's needed. Get in touch before dropping your machine in so we can confirm timing.

Do you offer quilting and embroidery classes?

Yes. We run beginner-friendly and intermediate classes in both quilting and embroidery throughout the year.

I have a favourite garment — can I learn to copy it?

Yes! Our Copy It! workshop teaches you how to reverse-engineer a pattern from a garment you already own. A really satisfying skill to have.

Do you run kids' classes?

We don't hold dedicated kids' classes at the moment, but there are a couple of classes that welcome kids and adults alike — like Sew a Softie. If you'd like to organise a group of 4–6 kids, please get in touch and we can put together a class especially for them.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes — 1:1 private lessons are available. Great if you want to focus on something specific or work at your own pace.

Can I book a private group session?

Yes. Private group sessions work well for birthdays, hen's parties, team events, and other special occasions. Get in touch to discuss what you have in mind.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes. Gift vouchers are digital, delivered by email, and valid for 3 years from purchase. They can be used for any class or course.

Is the studio accessible?

Accepted Answer

The studio is on Level 1, reached by two flights of stairs. Unfortunately we don't have lift access at this stage. If accessibility is a concern, please get in touch before booking and we'll do our best to help.

Are animals allowed?

No. Animals are not permitted inside the studio or anywhere on the premises, including tied up outside or on the footpath.

Do you accept donations from deceased estates?

Accepted Answer

Thank you so much for thinking of us — it genuinely means a lot. Unfortunately we're not in a position to accept donated fabric, equipment, or supplies, even from estates. If you're looking for a wonderful home for a sewing collection, we'd love to point you toward The Sewing Basket, a community sewing program run by the charity Achieve. They do incredible work and would be very grateful for the donation.
