About Usefulbox

A community sewing school in Marrickville built on one simple idea — everyone can sew, and everyone deserves to enjoy the process.

Our story

Usefulbox began in 2015 when founder Caz started helping friends gain confidence with their sewing machines. What started informally — a friend here, a neighbour there — grew into something bigger: a proper community sewing school with a full class schedule and a loyal, enthusiastic student base.

The name comes from the Playschool craft box — that magical container of possibility where anything could be made from what was inside. That spirit of creative potential is at the heart of everything we do.

A decade on, Usefulbox has welcomed hundreds of students through its doors, from complete beginners who have never threaded a needle, to experienced sewists looking to refine their craft.

Our philosophy

"Sewing should be joyful, not stressful."

We believe learning to sew should feel supportive and approachable — not intimidating. Our teachers meet you exactly where you are, with clear explanations, hands-on guidance, and a genuine love of the craft.

From machine setup and tension to terminology and technique, we cover the foundations that give you the confidence to sew independently long after the class ends.
