You do not need to bring your own machine. Classes are small with plenty of individual guidance from teachers throughout. Nearest station: Marrickville. Street parking available nearby. ## Policies **Cancellations & refunds:** - 15+ days before class: full refund, no questions asked - 14 days or less: no refund; one transfer available (subject to availability, $25 admin fee); no transfers within 48 hours of class - Multi-week courses: no refunds once term starts; missed sessions cannot be credited or transferred - If Usefulbox cancels: choice of transfer, credit, or full refund - Gift vouchers: non-refundable, not redeemable for cash **Class minimums:** Classes require 3–4 enrolled students to proceed. For those looking to buy: **Recommended:** Brother JV1400, Brother J17S, Brother TY600C (top pick), Brother A80, Bernina 335 **Brands to consider:** Bernina, Brother, Janome **Brands to avoid (modern):** Singer, Semco, Elsa Machine servicing is available through our partner Castillo Machine Repairs (Ludwim). Full service includes internal clean, tension calibration, lubrication, and stitch quality check. Pricing $150–$250. ## Sewing Patterns Usefulbox sells and gives away downloadable PDF sewing patterns via the Patterns page. Patterns are delivered as PDFs to download and make at home or in the studio. We also publish a guide to choosing a sewing pattern, written by Caz. It covers the three main ways to buy a pattern: - **Commercial paper patterns** from The Big 4 (Vogue, McCall's, Butterick, Simplicity), sold at fabric stores like Spotlight and Lincraft. These run large — size down. - **PDF patterns from independent designers**, printed at home on A4 or at a copy shop on A0. Truer to actual sizing and supports small business. - **Pattern books**, including Japanese pattern books. Tracing is advanced and seam allowance is often not included. The guide also recommends indie pattern designers grouped by skill level (beginner, adventurous beginner, intermediate) plus curvy, kids and accessories categories. ## Common Questions **Do I need my own sewing machine?** No — studio machines are available. Bringing your own is fine too. **What skill level do I need?** Each class lists its required level. If unsure, email us at hello@usefulbox.com.au. **Can kids attend?** Kids & Teens classes are available for ages 8+, run on a term basis. **How do gift vouchers work?** Digital delivery, valid for 3 years, redeemable on any class or workshop.
